Is Criticism Kryptonite?

Is Criticism Kryptonite?

72% of CEOs admit criticism stings.

Criticism can feel like failure.

But, handled right, it leads to its opposite - success.

Remember when Netflix pivoted from DVDs to streaming after customer complaints?

That shift, fueled by criticism, is a prime example of how negative feedback can lead to a positive outcome.

As CEOs, we face criticism daily:
From stakeholders, employees, the market.

It's often seen as negative,

A blow to our leadership.

But it doesn't have to be.

Criticism is simply feedback.

An Opinion.

An opportunity to learn.

How do we turn criticism into a catalyst for success?

Don't take it personally.

Easier said than done,

But it's crucial.

Criticism targets decisions or strategies,

Not you as a leader.

Listen actively.
Don't interrupt or get defensive,

Just listen.
What are they really saying?

Try to understand the other person's perspective.
What can you learn from it?

This is something I'm always trying to work on. I struggle still to this day.

Ask questions.
This shows you're open to feedback,

And it helps clarify any misunderstandings.

Reflect on the criticism.
Is it valid?

If so, do you need to improve?

Remember, criticism is not a sign of failure.
It's an opportunity for growth.

So, embrace it, learn from it, and keep moving forward.

Because the only true failure is not learning from your mistakes.
